Finite Element Methods for Von Karman Plate Bending Problems

Abstract: We consider the bending of thin elastic plates modelled by the nonlinear von Karman equations. Conforming and non-conforming Galerkin finite element methods are employed to approximate the displacement and Airy stress functions. An abstract approach for deriving optimal order a priori and a posteriori error estimates under minimal regularity assumptions on the exact solution is described. Results of numerical experiments are presented.
